1988-1989 Informal discussions to network Islamic-minded Bangladeshis in North America

March 24, 1990 Day-long meeting at University of Illinois, UC Campus. “North American Bangladeshi Islamic Community” or “NABIC” name chosen

In 1991, NABIC was incorporated as a non-profit, tax-exempt organization

In 1997, started sustained development & relief efforts

In 2001, ISNA-Bangladesh Fund started

In September 2004, hired its first full-time staff – “Director, NABIC Development & Relief Program”. ISNA-Bangladesh Fund closed
 

 


Background



On 24th March, 1990 a meeting was held at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, among a number of Bangladeshi Muslims coming from various parts of North America. Extensive exchange of ideas among these participants preceded this meeting. The main theme of the meeting was to explore how we can make a modest but meaningful contribution toward pursuing a bright, viable and prosperous future of Bangladesh and the Bangladeshi Muslim community in North America as parts of the Muslim Ummah. At the conclusion of this day-long meeting the participants unanimously decided to form an organization called North American Bangladeshi Islamic Community (NABIC).

  • Dr. Shahjahan Khan (Canada, at the time)

  • Dr. Salim Mansur (Canada)

  • Mr. Mustafa Pathan (Tennessee, now deceased)

  • Dr. M. Sultan Parvez (Mississippi, at the time)

  • Dr. Salim Rashid (Illinois)

  • Dr. Baker Ahmed Siddiquee (Illinois)

  • Dr. Abu N.M. Wahid (Illinois, at the time)
